Archiginnasio di Bologna

Home > Emilia-Romagna > Bologna > Bologna > Archiginnasio di Bologna

The construction of the Archiginnasio was wanted by Pope Pio IV, its designer was Antonio Morando who finished his work in 1563. It is a building which is rich in history and works of art. Its monumental aspect completes the urbanistic transformation of Piaza Maggiore.

The building has two floors with a portico on the front and an internal courtyard with two lodges which have englobed the church of Santa Maria dei Bulgari, rich in fresco's by B. Cesi and damaged during the last war.

The walls of the lodge and of the internal rooms are covered by a complex heraldic mural: about six thousand polychrome coat-of-arms which remind one of the Italian and foreign students who had roles within the university between the XVI and XVIII centuries. The Aula Magna degli Artisti and that of the Legisti must be visited; the latter is known as Stabat Mater.

Interesting and unique is the Anatomical Theatre on the first floor: it was the room dedicated to lessons of anatomy for those who were studying medicine. The decorations on the ceiling are made of spruce wood and there are statues of illustrious doctors as well as the figures of the "spellati" (skinned) by E. Lelli.

The room was built in accordance with the design by A. Levanti in 1637, it collapsed due to the bombing in 1944 but was then reconstructed.
