Basilica di Santo Stefano
Home > Emilia-Romagna > Bologna > Bologna > Basilica di Santo Stefano
The homonymous Piazza is the background for the Basilica di Santo Stefano which is formed by varous buildings which represnt the Passion and the Crucifixion of Christ. It was built on a Temple dedicated to Iside; in fact, one can see a Roman inscription to this Goddess.
For the building, old and pre-existing material from the Roman and Bizantine ages was used. Construction work was carried out from 1200 to 1400.
Trandition wants Saint Petronio as the designer of the Basilica, and his tomb, which was in a cell surmounted by a pulpit in the Basilica di Santo Stefano, has now been transfered to the Basilica which bears his name.
