Badia Fiorentina
Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Badia Fiorentina
The Badia Fiorentina was built in 978. In 1285 Arnolfo di Cambio re-designed it in Gothic style. During the Renaissance Masaccio designed Sant'Ivo, but the precious painting which is noteworthy for its beauty and modernity was destroyed whilst trying to detach it from its base so as to take it elsewhere.
The Badia Fiorentina was restructured again in 1600 and in 1700 and presents various styles and structures which are easily recognised: Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque, and it is very rich in chapels and sepulchral monuments.
Its belfry is not the original one as that one was knocked down and reconstructed on a hexagonal base. For years its bells have rung out every hour for the people of Florence.
