Basilica della Santissima Annunziata
Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Basilica della Santissima Annunziata
Building of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata began in 1250 on the spot where seven noblemen abandoned their rich way of life so as to dedicate themselves to a totally monastic existence. They dedicated the Church to the Madonna Annunziata and founded an oratory which was then transformed into a Church.
The main part was begun by Michelozzo, then Gian Battista Alberti constructed the Gallery on the left-and side.
In the Basilica there are three environments: the Cappella dei Pucci, the Chiostro dei Voti richly frescoed by Contorno, Andrea del Sarto and by Rosso Fiorentino.
A curiosity: on the day of their wedding, it is tradition for the Florentine brides to take flowers to the church so as to ask the Santissima Annunziata for protection .
