Uffizi Gallery
Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Uffizi GalleryThe Galleria degli Uffizi (Uffizi Museum) was strongly wanted by Cosimo 1st, and was enriched after his death by the Medici’s and the Lorena’s who successively became the owners.
Based on plans designed by Bernardo Buontalenti, work began in 1559 and ended in 1580.
It is a U-formed building with an architraved portico on the ground floor, windows on the first floor and, on the second floor, one finds the rooms where Francesco 1st conserved his varied and rich art and antique jewellery collection .
The gallery’s vaults house fresco’s by various artists; Francesco 1st wanted this building to host his administrative offices, the archives and the court of law of Florence. The gallery presently hosts Italian and foreign painting masterpieces and antique sculptures and is considered one of the largest artistic collections in the world. One can find work by Giotto and Cimabue, by Donatello, Simone Martini, Paolo Ucello, Pier della Francesca and Botticelli.
Here one can also admire: the splendid “Tondo Doni” (Doni Madonna) by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1507), the “Madonna del Cardellino” (Madonna of the Goldfinch) by Raffaello (1505), as well as paintings by Tiziano, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and many others.
