Piazza della Signoria

Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria was enlarged by the Guelfi's in 1200 - 1300, through the demolition of the houses of their rivals: the Ghibellini's, after having defeated them. It is one of the most famous squares in Italy and was, in the Medieval era, the centre of civil life in Florence.

It was embellished by sculptures amongst which a Mazzocco which is the typical Florentine lion with a shield, the bronze group Giuditta e Olofeme by Donatello, a copy of the David by Michelangelo (the original is to be found in the Galleria dell'Accademia, in Florence), the statue of Cosimo 1st by Giambologna, the Neptune Fountain by Ammannati, and Ercole e Caco by Bandinelli. In the square one also finds Palazzo della Signoria and the Loggia della Signoria.
