Piazza Santa Maria Novella
Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Piazza Santa Maria Novella
Piazza Santa Maria Novella is one of the largest squares in the centre of Florence. It has undergone more than one enlargement so as to allow the faithful to hear the sermons of the Dominican Monks who stayed in the Convent which is to be found beside the church.
In the Medieval era the square was also used for feasts and games, and the "Palio dei Cocchi", wanted by Cosimo 1st, was run here. On the other sides of the square there are: the Ospedale di San Paolo with a long lodge and an antique Pharmacy where the monks used to prepare medicines using herbs and medicinal plants. These are still sold today.
