Ponte alle Grazie
Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Ponte alle Grazie
Ponte alle Grazie was built in 1237 and called "Rubaconte" bridge in honour of the then chief governor of Florence. It had nine arches and was characteristic because small houses and chapels were built on it, as well as the cells of a small convent.
Among the chapels there was one dedicated to Santa Maria alle Grazie which was the destination of pilgrims both noble and not, hence the change of name of the bridge.
Destroyed by the Germans during the second world war, it was rebuilt in 1957 and now has five arches whose concrete structure has been covered by stone and cement, and painted white.
