Ponte Santa TrinitÃ
Home > Tuscany > Florence > Florence > Ponte Santa TrinitÃ
Ponte Santa Trinità was built in 1252 close to the homonymous church and was financed by the Frescobaldi family. However it fell in 1259 under the weight of the people from Florence who were watching a show. It was rebuilt but it collapsed again and only in 1557 did work begin again thanks to Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The bridge has a very elegant and innovative form with three arches whose centre is very high so as to allow the passage of trunks and debris when the Arno river floods. Four statues are on the corners of the bridge and represent the four seasons, making it even more pleasant.
During the second world war it was destroyed by the Germans, however it was rebuilt with the same method and most of the original material recuperated from the Arno river.
