Home > Lombardy > Milan > Milan > Castello Sforzesco
The Castello Sforzesco in Milan is one of the most well known monuments of the Lombard Region, second only to the even more famous Duomo. The Castle was founded for want of Francesco Sforza around halfway through the XV century. The imposing building was constructed on the ruins of a fortress called Castello di Porta Giovia, built in 1300 by Galeazzo II Visconti.
During its long history, Castello Sforzesco has undergone many transformations. Over the years, various high-ranking, Milan-based persons thought it opportune to carry out modifications to the Castle, so a to leave their mark in this important place of power.
The most significant changes were carried out between the 1800's and the 1900's, when the Castle underwent a profound restoration by Luca Beltramini. At the same time, behind the Castle, rose Parco Sempione.
Nowadays Castello Sforzesco has ceased to be the symbol of power, and has become an important cultural centre. The building, in fact, hosts a series of exhibitions and museums amongst which the Castello Sforzesco Art Gallery, the Antique Art Museum, and the Prehistoric Museum.
Castello Sforzesco is in the centre of Milan, close to other important monuments like the Duomo and the Scala Theatre. Tourists interested in visiting the Castle can stay in one of the many hotels in Milan, a city that has numerous hotels and other structures ready to welcome visitors at any time of the year.
