Parco Sempione

Home > Lombardy > Milan > Milan > Parco Sempione

Parco Sempione, in Milan, is the main green area of the Lombardy Region's capital and is situated behind the Castello Sforzesco, in the centre of the city. The immense garden is decorated in the English style, ith trees and plants distributed in a very picturesque style, all is enriched by a lake which is populated by ducks.

Construction of the park began in 1890 based on a design by architect Emilio Alemagna who wanted to insert an irregular environment within the rigid regularity which was typical of the city of Milan. The green area was realised in the place where, up to that moment, there had been the parade ground of the Castello Sforzesco, and it borrowed the name of "Sempione" from the nearby road which connects the Duome to Passo del Sempione, passing under the Arco della Pace.

Parco Sempione represents, nowadays, an important reference point for the citizens of the city of Milan, just as it does for tourists who, in this environment, can find moments of amusement and relax. As well as the areas dedicated to amusement, however, the park also hosts some very important monuments like the Palazzo dell'Arte, where the Triennale di Milano is situated, the Acuario Civico, and the Torre del Parco also called Torre Littoria.

Parco Sempione is close to the Duomo and the Castello Sforzesco, in the centre of the city. Tourists who decide to go there cn stay in one of the many hotels in the vicinity as Milan is a city that has a great number of hotels.
