Abbazia di Santa Maria Annunziata Nuova di Scolca
Home > Emilia-Romagna > Rimini > Rimini > Abbazia di Santa Maria Annunziata Nuova di Scolca
The Abbazia di Santa Maria Annunziata Nuova di Scolca is in Rimini.
The building was constructed in 1418 thanks to a donation from the Lord of Rimini, Carlo Malatesta.
The building was given to the Augustinians of San Paolo Primo Martire d'Ungheria, who were called back to Hungary. Consequently, Carlo passed the building on to the Benedictine monks from Monte Oliveto Maggiore. They modified and enlarged the building, hence the primitive church was reconstructed and enriched with numerous works of art. The facade is still that which one sees today and it bears the coat-of-arms of one of the Lords of Rimini, Roberto Malatesta. However, on the inside one finds the coat-of-arms of another Lord of Rimini, Carlo Malatesta, in the centre of the ceiling. The two lateral chapels were realised during the sixteenth century. The right-hand chapel was frescoed by the great Girolamo Marchesi da Cotignola and by Giorgio Vasari.
Nowadays, the chapels are used as a Sacresty. In 1797 the Ordine degli Olivetani was suppressed, hence the title of the Parish of San Fortunato was transfered. During the second world war, the complex underwent severe damage.
