Arch of Augustus
Home > Emilia-Romagna > Rimini > Rimini > Arch of Augustus
The Arch of Augustus was built in 27 a.C. for want of the Roman Senate in honour of Augusto and his restoration work of the via Flaminia and other important roads. This is illustrated by the inscription that is inscribed over the arch.
The Arch signs the entrance to the city for those coming from the via Flaminia, road which connects Rome to Rimini. It is surely one of the most celebrated and important Roman monuments in Northern Italy.
The original construction was englobed in two polygonal towers, of which only a few traces remain today, and was surmounted by an attic. The complex is exalted by an array of decorations which are full of political and propogandist meaning. It is also permeated by a strong religious character which gives a sacred aspect to the door of the city.
The Arco d'Augusto is one of the most representative monuments of Rimini.
