Bridge of Tiberius

The Bridge of Tiberius is situated in a tactical position and connects the historical centre of Rimini to Borgo San Giuliano.

The construction dates back to the antique Roman era. Work began in 14 d.C. and was concluded in 21 d.C. as is written in the inscription to be found on the internal parapets. Work terminated under the reign of Tiberio, hence the name. Constructed in Istria stone, it has five arches that rest on pillars with breakwater spurs and set obliquely with respect to the bridge's axis so as to go along with the current of the Marecchia river. In fact, it is the only river-crossing bridge in Rimini that resisted the German bombings and can still be crossed nowadays, even by heavy vehicles.

On the sides of the flooring stone slabs can be seen bearing Latin inscriptions. According to a legend it is the umpteenth "Ponte del Diavolo" (Devil's Bridge) because it bears the imprint of two notches which are similar to a goat's hooves prints.
