Church of San Giovanni Evangelista

The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista constitutes a witness to Gothic art in Rimini. It was built by the Agostiniani monks at the end of the XIII century. At the beginning of the same century a decorative area was realised which is composed of cycls of fresco's and by a big Wooden Crucifix, the Stories of the Virgin are in the belfry, and on the walls of the apse a Cristo, a Madonna in Maestà, and the Stories of Saint Giovanni Evangelista.

These works were revealed by the earthquake in 1916.

In the eighteenth century a restoration enriched the artistic patrimony of the Church with Baroque stucco on the ceilings by Bibiena and fresco's by Vittorio Maria Bigari.

The facade was changed by the restoration which also altered the appearance of the inside.

Beside the church there is a big Convent which hosted an important Library, a Studio, and a Boading School.

The French troupes suppressed the Church and nowadays there is just a large courtyard.
