Piazza Cavour
Home > Emilia-Romagna > Rimini > Rimini > Piazza CavourPiazza Cavour probably rose in the late Roman era. The square is situated in the historical centre of Rimini.
In 1204 the Palazzo dell'Arengo was built which hosted the justice administration. Beside this building, the residence of the High Officials was built.
The fulcrum of the square is the fountain which used to be the meeting point for wholesalers, merchants, and travellers and this custom is still in use today.
The foundain was built in 1543 and on its top there was once a statue of Saint Paul. This statue was substituted by a fir cone in the 19th century, and this now gives its name to the monument. In the square one can find Palazzo Garampi which is the present seat of the Town Hall. At the centre there is a statue of Pope Paul V. The square also used to host the Fish Market, nowadays known as the "old fish market", which was designed by Francesco Buonamici.
The present form of the square was given by the reconstruction which was obligatory because of the 1916 earthquake.
