Porta Galliana

Porta Galliana acts as a connection from the city to the harbour area along the shores of the Marecchia river. It was built in the thirteenth century and was part of the defensive city walls. Its restoration was carried out for want of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini, and this is confirmed by the deposit of Malasteiana medals which were found during the excavations carried out during the twentieth century. However, Porta Galliana was closed during the XVI century and substituted by a tower which, during the eighteenth century, was called "Torrione dei Cavalieri".
