Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie
Home > Emilia-Romagna > Rimini > Rimini > Santuario di Santa Maria delle GrazieThe Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most illustrious sanctuaries of the Diocese of the Rimini territory. It stands on the hillside of Covignano. Its construction dates back to the end of the fourteenth century for want of the Caminate family.
The first church was consecrated in 1430, later a beautiful wooden ceiling was added which reminds one of the keel of a ship. Successively, it was enlarged and enriched by prestigious works of art and fresco's from the fourteenth century.
A legend tells the story of a sheperd looking after his sheep who sculpted a Madonna from a tree trunk, however he was unable to finish her face, so the angles did it for him. The prodigiously finished image was embarked and finished up in Venice where it is nowadays venerated as the "Madonna from Rimini".
