Circus of Nero

The Circo di Nerone (Circus of Nero) once rose on the grounds which now host the Basilica di San Pietro, and was almost 500 metres long. The works were initiated by Caligola and completed by Nerone.

It was the Emperors private circus, and hosted horse races which were sometimes allowed to be seen by the Roman public.

Here the execution of the Christians that were judged guilty of the Great Fire of Rome, took place.
