Piazza di Spagna
Home > Lazio > Rome > Rome > Piazza di Spagna
Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous squares in Rome.
The square has an irregular shape which opens out towards the Pincio hillside, at the feet of the Trinità dei Monti stairway, and is ideal as a starting point towards the well known via Condotti.
The stairway is made up of 135 steps and was inaugurated for the Jubilee in 1725 by Pope Benedetto XIII.
It was constructed so as to connect the Spanish Bourbon Consulate (from which the square takes its name) to the church of SS. Trinità dei Monti.
It was designed by Alessandro Specchi and Francesco De Sanctis and was restored in 1995.
The square hosts the famous Fontana della Barcaccia, from the Baroque era, which was realised by Bernini and his son.
On the right hand side of the square one finds the house, nowadays a museum, which belonged to the English poet John Keats.
