Senate Building
Home > Lazio > Rome > Rome > Senate Building
The Palazzo Senatorio (Senate Building) is to be found in Rome, in Piazza del Campidoglio.
The building was constructed between the XII and the XIII centuries on the ruins of the antique Tabularium.
In 1144, it was the office of the Municipality of Rome and of the city's most important representative: the Senator, the person responsible for the administration of justice and of the interests of the city dwellers.
Over the years it underwent many changes carried out by Michelangelo who projected the monumental double stairway which has the function of triple entrance to the new halls of the Senator, the elegant architectural environment which houses the two antique statues of the Nile and the Tevere rivers. Then Giacomo della Porta and Girolamo Rinaldi began work again and concluded the facade in 1605.
In front of the stairway there is a statue of the Rome Goddess.
Nowadays it is the office of the Municipality of Rome, and of great interest are the Mayor's office which is to be found in the Nicolo V tower and has an extraordinary view; the Council hall which conserves the statue of Julius Caesar, and the Flag room which is used for the meetings of the District Council.
