Temple of Apollo Palatinus
Home > Lazio > Rome > Rome > Temple of Apollo PalatinusThe Tempio di Apollo Palatino (Temple of Apollo Palatinus) is situated in Rome on the Palatino hillside, beside the House of Augustus. It was inaugurated in 28 a.C. and is one of the most important buildings of the Palatino hill.
In the past it was entirely built in marble and its doors were covered in gold and ivory. It was enriched by the statues of the fifty daughters of Danao, the equestrian statues of the sons of Egypt.
Nowadays the Temple seems completely bare, only the cement podium remains. Little remains of the aforementioned statues, and only a few fragments of the statue of Apollo are still visible: part of the face and a foot which are conserved in the Palatino Museum.
The excavations carried out revealed sacred and legendary objects tied to the worship of Apollo which probably decorated the Danaidi Portico, connected to the Temple.
