Triton Fountain
Home > Lazio > Rome > Rome > Triton Fountain
The Fontana del Tritone (Triton Fountain) is situated in Rome, in Piazza Barberini.
It was built between 1642 and 1643 and is work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This work was commissioned to him by Pope Urbano VIII.
The fountain is realised with travertine and represents four dolphins which hold up a shell in which Triton is kneeling. The fountain is rich in bees, symbol of the Barberini family, and a tiara with crossed keys which is the coat-of-arms of the Popes.
In the past the Romans called the fountain "Triton Sonante" (Whispering Triton) due to the fact that the fountain's jet of water emitted an acute hiss as it came out of the shell.
