Piazza Tre Martiri
Home > Emilia-Romagna > Rimini > Rimini > Piazza Tre MartiriPiazza Tre Martiri is in the historical centre of Rimini and traces part of the Roman forum of Ariminum. Founded in 268 a.C. it is situated on the crossroads of two main roads, the cardo and the deumano. Originally it hosted honorary statues and valuable architecture. The square hosts a bronze statue that reminds one of the speeches that Giulio Cesare presumably made to the legions after the crossing of the Rubicone.
In the Medieval age the square hosted the market and, under its portico's, there were butcher shops. It was also the stage for merry-go-rounds, horse riding competitions, demonstrations, and public ceremonies tied to the Malatesta family.
The portico on the side of the square that faces the hillsides is decorated with Gothic and Renaissance era capitals. In 1547 the area of the Clock Tower was built, giving the square its present aspect with porticoed buildings where the butcher shops once were. Antique buildings are the frame of this square, such as Palazzo Tingoli which is now the seat of the Credito Italiano bank. The square is also connected to tragic war events, in fact, it is dedicated to the three partisan martyrs who were hung there on 16th August 1944, on the spot which is now countersigned by a marble insert and the Monumento ai Caduti.
