Brera

Home > Lombardy > Milan > Milan > Brera

Brera is an antique District in the city of Milan. The area takes its name from the via Brera which crosses the District and which also gave its name to the famous Palazzo di Brera where the homonymous Pinacoteca is also found.

The Brera District is characterised by small roads and tight alleys, and its roads host monuments and buildings which have a great importance like the already quoted Pinacoteca di Brera. There are also Piazza del Carmine which hosts the homonymous church, and the beautiful statue dedicated to Francesco Hayez, the famous Venetian painter whose history is very much tied to that of the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Brera.

In the past the District of Brera was very characteristic and frequented by the artists of the city. It was rich in small caffè's where the artists would meet: a District which recalled the Bohemian style in Paris. This atmosphere has been lost and Brera has become very much more luxurious and refined, rich in night clubs frequented by the younger generations. In front of the bars and pubs there are many shops and boutiques which make this District an important tourist attraction, a symbol of the upper-class Milan and of fashion.

The Brera District is to be found in the centre of Milan, a few steps away from other places of interest like Castello Sforzesco and via Montenapoleone. Tourists interested in visiting these evocative places can stay in one of the numerous hotels in Milan, a city that is well equipped for the reception of tourists.
