Work for the realisation of the Basilica di Santa Croce began in 1295 and was finished in 1348. The design was by Arnolfo di Cambio and construction was for want of the Franciscan monks.

The style of the Basilica is Gothic, however the facade is from the 19th century.

Inside there are fresco's by Giotto and the memorial stones of illustrious Florentines by Vasari, Canova, and Bartolini.

Amongst the famous tombs to be found: Macchiavelli, Michelangelo, Galileo, Foscolo, and Alfieri.

The central nave is surrounded by arches which are sustained by octagonal columns; it has an unusual "T" shape, and on the bottom there are eleven Chapels containing the tombs of the Florentines who contributed to the construction of the Basilica di Santa Croce.
