Temple of Apollo Sosianus
Home > Lazio > Rome > Rome > Temple of Apollo SosianusThe Temple of Apollo Sosianus or Tempio di Apollo in Circo (it takes its name from the area indicated as Circo Flaminio) is a Temple from antique Rome and is to be found close to the Teatro di marcello.
The first Temple dedicated to Apollo Medico was inaugurated in 431 a.C. and was restored more than once, however a radical reconstruction was begun by Caio Sosio, probably to clebrate his triumph, in 34 a.C.
The three columns belong to the restoration carried in Augustan era, connected by stone and with the insertion of blocks of travertine so as to rienforce the structure.
The columns of the Temple fell, and only in 1940 were they put in the position in which they stand today, which is obviously different from their original position.
The facade of the Temple is decorated with sculptures taken from a classical Greek Temple and illustrate the conflicts of the Greeks and the Amazons. Nowadays it has been recomposed in the Montemartini head office of the Capitolini Museums.
